Role Description

About Loam

At Loam, we have the earth in our hands. As a team of scientists, farmers and entrepreneurs, we are on a mission to improve the world’s farmland and address climate change.

We are developing microbial technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and build carbon in agricultural soils. With a dedicated agenda to deliver nature based solutions, we help farming businesses prosper by boosting yield and soil health and enabling access to carbon markets.

As a start-up with ambitious founders and investors, our work is fast-paced and multidimensional. We foster a supportive and diverse workplace, where every team member is encouraged to learn and grow beyond their area of expertise.

While everyone at Loam is working in different roles, we all have one job: to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it stably in the soil.

About the role

Loam is rapidly expanding and looking for a passionate Carbon Data Scientist reporting to the Head of Carbon Markets Team. You will develop, lead and operate our technical capabilities within the various MRV (measurement, reporting, and verification) carbon offset protocols at a global level. The successful candidate will turn MRV information into insight and tools.

Key accountabilities of the role include conducting full lifecycle analysis to include requirements, activities and design tools (e.g. net abatement models and sequestration forecasting models), reports, processes and methodologies to ensure we can successfully execute multiple MRV protocols at scale, while monitoring performance and quality control plans to identify improvements. You will leverage a wide range of datasets, going all the way from global climate data, to local farm/field data. Your models will span across various ranges of spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. You’ll be expected to handle these independently, and with great ease.

You might be a great fit if:

  • 5+ years of work experience at high-growth consulting, professional services or tech environment working in climate change, environmental science or sustainability.
  • You are exceptionally organised and process-driven
  • You accomplish important complex projects and own them end-to-end no matter what
  • You are an exceptional written communicator and a strong verbal communicator

Responsibilities

  • Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing reports
  • Develop and implement relevant databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
  • Contribute to MRV program strategy and development of (soil carbon) co-benefits and economic modelling
  • Develop relevant tools (e.g. net abatement calculators), reports, processes and methodologies to support multiple MVR protocols at scale
  • Contribute to the improvement of soil carbon methodologies, systems and carbon trading opportunities for farmers through interaction across many industry disciplines, curating findings to your core team
  • Locate and define new process improvement opportunities
  • Collaborate with product and technical teams to further enhance our carbon platform with your expertise and experience based on customer interactions and feedback
  • Contribute to thought leadership activities in partnership with commercial teams and assist on research and ensuring our leadership and compliance with rapidly evolving models and protocols

Willingness to relocate or travel to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Requirements

  • Experience designing and implementing carbon projects, particularly in the agricultural sector a plus
  • You have demonstrated experience in the area of sustainability, ideally with experience (>3 years) in greenhouse gas accounting
  • You have proven experience or strong desire to learn the fundamentals of carbon emissions accounting and reporting frameworks (voluntary or regulatory) across various GHG Protocols
  • You’re familiar with climate accounting and target setting landscape, and have a demonstrated understanding of the underpinning science, and its challenges and limitations
  • You have very strong analytic skills and a proven track record of problem-solving
  • Experience and/or enthusiasm for working in an innovative, fast-paced and ever-changing start-up environment
  • You have a ‘can do’ attitude and a willingness to pitch in and get stuff done

Desirable - not essential

  • Experience with Scope 3 inventories focused on supply chain / financed emissions accounting will be highly regarded.
  • GIS (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS) experience. Highly desirable are intermediate or advanced utility and involvement in development and improvement of spatial products
  • Experience using carbon calculators specific to agricultural systems - eg; AFI FarmGAS, Cool Farm Tools, FarmPrint, LOOC-C, FullCAM, RothC

Benefits

  • Collaborative and highly engaging work environment with engagement across Loam international teams.
  • Ability to have significant impact and grow with the organisation
  • Competitive package on offer, including base salary and participation in the Employee Share Option Package (ESOP)
