Role Description

Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in heavy industry and powering a sustainable future. The company’s AI-enabled, modular concentrated solar technology aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, or green hydrogen fuel at scale – for the first time in history.

**Team Overview: **

Heliogen seeks a Design and Configuration Lead to oversee CAD and PLM systems and work with the Engineering team to produce and maintain solid models, assemblies, schematics and Bills of Material (BOMs).  A Design and Configuration Lead will have the opportunity to work with leading developers of solar thermal energy collection and storage systems technology to deploy commercially viable concentrating solar power plants.

You Aspire To:

  • Work with Responsible Engineers (RE’s) to create, define and maintain accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies and layouts for key systems and subsystems.
  • Assist configuration engineers with design releases, version control, and as-built documentation.
  • Help implement, improve and maintain the company’s processes for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Product Data Management (PDM), documentation and workflows.
  • Be a key member of teams designing mechanical, thermal and electrical systems, understanding how they function so that the designs and documentation you help develop will result in successful products.
    • Utilize a good understanding of statics, mechanics, kinematics and controls of electro-mechanical assemblies.
    • Create assemblies of moderate to high complexity.
    • Visually review CAD for issues like interferences, and work with relevant RE’s to resolve the issues.
  • Participate hands-on with prototype and production hardware and facilities, to ensure that designs are informed by and support the manufacturing, deployment and operation of our products and concentrating solar power plants.
  • Organize CAD spin reviews to “walk through” the 3D model assemblies with cross-functional teams at key points in the design and development process.
  • Create assembly drawings while incorporating redlines from Engineers.
  • Provide quick dimensional information for people who don't have access to the CAD.

What's Essential:

  • Ability to create and maintain well-defined 3D models, 2D diagrams and drawings in CAD.
  • Experience with PDM and PLM software, workflows and processes.
  • Strong organizational ability, including tracking project goals, deliverables, and timeline for execution.
  • Understanding of tolerances, tolerance stack-ups, geometric tolerancing, establishing datums and interfaces, and the importance of effectively documenting designs.
  • Passion for working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelors degree and 3+ years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other technical field; or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.

Desirable Experience:

Note that any of the experiences below would be beneficial, but not required, for this position.

  • 5+ years using SolidWorks CAD and PDM, and/or AutoCAD
  • 5+ years using PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software such as Arena, SolidWorks Manage, UpChain, Windchill, etc.
  • 10+ years supporting design, manufacturing and/or operation of highly technical products in industries such as Energy, Aerospace, Automotive, Construction, Consumer Electronics, or other industries where electro-mechanical systems are critical.
  • Experience with high-volume mechanical products and/or electronics.
  • Experience with power plant drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, control diagrams, heat exchanger and/or turbomachinery design.
  • Familiarity developing technology from small-scale prototyping to manufacturing and increased production capacity

Heliogen was created at Idealab, the leading technology incubator founded by Bill Gross in 1996.
