Role Description

Dendra Systems is a start-up enabling global scale restoration of the natural world.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive lead field ecologist with exceptional flora and fauna identification skills to join our growing team. Must have a minimum 5 years of ecological experience working in the field and be familiar with flora and fauna assessments across WA. Must have exceptional communication and time management skills as the position requires communicating across multiple time zones on various platforms and channels.

The ideal candidate will have a proactive rather than reactive approach to problem solving, responding quickly and methodically as issues arise. The candidate should have the ability to effectively access and analyse a diverse range of information across multiple platforms.

The role requires the delegation of tasks, providing direction and instruction on what is needed to be achieved and how. The candidate should be able to work independently and part of a team. The job often requires independent working and therefore self-motivation is a must.

Responsibilities

The principal role of the Field Ecologist will be

  • to support the development of digitised biodiversity assessments through the collection and verification of data related to native and invasive plant species in the Western Australian and Australian ecosystems,
  • Plan and lead field surveys including the collection of accurate data using a DGPS unit,
  • Collection and identification of field samples (flora),
  • population of databases and
  • collaboration with Dendra’s Ecology team and multiple other internal departments where required.

Minimum skills and experience:

  • Degree in Biology/ Botany/ Ecology/ Forest engineering or any similar background.
  • Demonstrated experience in ecology field surveys (5 years +).
  • Understanding of ecosystems and forest environments.
  • Understanding of ecosystem restoration.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead field surveys
  • Capacity to identify native and invasive plant species.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Familiarity with Google Docs or similar software.
  • Above average computer competency (familiar with use of Windows +/- MacOS and installation of common software packages).
  • Right to work in Australia
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated teamwork.
  • Ability to identify issues and problems and develop appropriate solutions
  • Working knowledge of the relevant environmental regulatory and policy frameworks in Western Australia including regulatory and policy requirements within the mining industry.

Preferred skills and experience

  • Accreditation to undertake vegetation assessments
  • Knowledge of phenological characterisation of flora species, survey inventories and sample collection.
  • Any programming experience (matlab, R, python, etc, excludes Excel formulas and similar)

Location
This position is located in Perth, Australia with some traveling required in Australia.
