Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.
ARC will be the first machine to produce electricity from fusion energy, serving as the cornerstone to a new industry. This individual will build and lead the team designing the tokamak core of ARC, building off the work done for SPARC. The tokamak core includes all superconducting and normal conducting magnet systems, the vacuum vessel and internal systems, the cryostat systems, the molten salt blanket systems, and the assembly and remote maintenance systems. This will be a challenging multidisciplinary effort, spanning structural, thermal, hydraulic, electromagnetic, superconductors, cryogenics, extreme heat fluxes, neutronics, and vacuum engineering. This individual will need to be comfortable with proceeding on a parallel design and construction process, proceeding at risk without all information and incorporating results from analysis and R&D while doing the design. While magnetic fusion and tokamak experience is desired for this role, exceptional candidates with no fusion background will be considered.
- Build and lead the team of designers, analysts, and engineers for the ARC tokamak core
- Plan and execute a design that proceeds at risk with incomplete information
- Navigate a complex design with highly interdependent trade-offs
- Collaborate with the SPARC team to transfer know-how and tools developed for the SPARC design
- Report to the Head of ARC
- Supervisory reports include the Heads of all ARC tokamak core subsystems (i.e. superconducting and normal conducting magnet systems, the vacuum vessel and internal systems, the cryostat systems, the molten salt blanket systems, and the assembly and remote maintenance systems) as well as a Head of ARC CAD
- At least a bachelor’s in a relevant engineering field
- Built and lead a team of designers and analysts on complex, interdisciplinary projects from blank slate to at least preliminary, if not complete, design
- A proven ability to motivate and catalyze teams into action through influence rather than by command
- Integrity and accountability at all levels along with empathy and tact in communicating
- The skill to clearly express and critique ideas
- Built great teams through attracting a diverse group of the world’s top talent
- The ability to solve problems and make decisions under ambiguous conditions
- A value for elegance and simplicity over complexity with a drive towards commercially-viable solutions
Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:
- PE Magnetic fusion (tokamak, stellarator, etc.) or similar type of large-scale superconducting magnet project (e.g., particle accelerator)
- PE license
- Ability to perform activities such as typing and sitting for extended periods of time
CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is combining proven physics backed by decades of government-funded fusion research with a revolutionary superconducting magnet technology to accelerate the path to commercial fusion energy.
