Software System Design Engineer

Software Engineering
REMOTE

Role Description

ZeroAvia is a leader in zero-emission aviation, flying the world’s largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. Our focus is the design and commercialization of hydrogen-powered aviation solutions to address a variety of markets, initially targeting short-haul, sub-regional commercial flights up to 500 miles. To date, ZeroAvia has secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly for its 6 seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain, passed significant flight tests, and is on track for commercial deliveries by 2024. Its achievements to date were rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member to the UK Jet Zero Council.

ZeroAvia’s powertrain development focuses on tightly integrating H2 Fuel Cell power systems and storage, along with electric drivetrain components, to deliver a unified solution that is both environmentally friendly and economically superior to traditional aircraft drivetrain solutions.

Working with the Head of System Design and in conjunction with the Electrical Propulsion and Power Generation teams, the Software System Design Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Development of the electrical propulsion, fuel cell and power distribution system component software architecture, modes and states.
  • Development of execution related requirements e.g. cockpit responses, power up times, restart times, latency and availability.
  • Support the development of sub-system or aircraft-level issues by collaborating with the component engineering teams and stakeholders
  • Definition of software timing, execution times, range, accuracy and resolution requirements
  • Definition of SW partitioning, monitoring, disimilarity requirements appropriate for designated subsytem DAL levels
  • Definition of fault detection, error handling, fault containment, buit in test and voting schemes
  • Definiton of the aircraft interfaces, software field loading, security, maintainability and growth requirements.

Experience Required

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline such as Software, Controls or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Software Engineering development standard DO178c and safety and certification processes
  • Experience of the software design lifecycle within aerospace, automotive or similar embedded software development environment
  • Awareness of different software verification strategies and test equipment.
  • Experience with MBSE in specifying, designing, analsysing and verifying systems
