Sr Infrastructure Engineer (Remote - West Coast)

Software Engineering
REMOTE

Role Description

Our Mission

SPAN develops products that accelerate the rapid adoption of renewable energy in the home. The flagship SPAN Smart Panel is the first true evolution for the traditional home electric panel, harnessing enhanced technology for metering, monitoring, and control. An expanded product suite of intelligent, integrated solutions radically lowers the cost and complexity of energy upgrades–including solar, batteries and EVs–empowering homeowners to be active, resilient and informed players in the energy market.

The Role

We are seeking an infrastructure engineer to join our team building the cloud-based glue that gives our users access to the rich information and controls provided by SPAN Panel, SPAN Drive, and future products. Our system collects a large volume of energy monitoring data that needs to be stored, processed and exposed in different ways for different end users. We're also opening up never-before available levels of control of the energy in the home that need to be accessed in secure and easy-to-use APIs.

You’ll join our cloud software engineering team bringing your infrastructure expertise to bear as we design, implement and manage the SPAN cloud system. You’ll work with other engineers including mobile, device firmware, and systems software in our broader software engineering group. Your infrastructure experience will help us ensure that the SPAN cloud is robust, secure and efficient.

You can work remotely from your home office. We are looking for candidates who are on PST and are willing to travel to our San Francisco office at least once a quarter.

Responsibilities

  • Design infrastructure patterns to provide highly available, efficient, secure and observable components to the SPAN Cloud using the latest tools from AWS, Terraform and other SaaS providers
  • Work on the delivery of new and improved customer facing features for homeowners, installers and electricity utility companies
  • Continuously harden and monitor the SPAN Cloud for security and reliability
  • Build tooling to support the broad software engineering group in efficient operations
  • Set up automated build systems for building and deploying code, not just to the cloud but also with our firmware and mobile teams

About You

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in cloud software development of any kind. At least 3 of those years focused on Infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE of those systems
  • History of collaborating with engineers from multiple domains to complete infrastructure projects or support product deliverables
  • Experience building AWS-based infrastructure including VPCs, Networking, Messaging (e.g. SNS, SQS, Kinesis), Compute (e.g. Lambda, EC2, Fargate) with Docker containers
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code tools (e.g. Terraform, Cloudformation, AWS CDK, Saltstack) and techniques for reusability and reliability of components.
  • Understanding of engineering principles and processes to design secure, robust, scalable and resilient infrastructure
  • Experience collaborating with coworkers in a shared codebase using industry standard tools and processes including source control, linting and unit testing
  • Expertise with a common scripting language (e.g. JavaScript, Python), and desire to work with TypeScript and NodeJS.

Bonus Qualifications
We would love to hire someone with experience working in one or more of the following areas:

  • Internet of Things (IoT) products (e.g. AWS IoT, Google Cloud IoT, something homegrown) or other hardware component to the product
  • Managing Open Source or Third Party systems (e.g. ElasticSearch, Kafka, Hashicorp Vault) in AWS
  • Setting up CI/CD pipelines, especially for cloud, mobile, and firmware applications
  • Network management and security in AWS (e.g. NAT Gateways, WAFs, Security Groups)
  • Third party monitoring systems (e.g. Data Dog, Splunk)
  • Testing and validation of Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terratest, unittesting CDK)
  • Implementing on call and incident response strategies
  • Setting up and testing disaster recovery plans
