Position Overview
This position will provide comprehensive engineering diagnostic support to Proterra’s Customer Service Engineering Manager and other site leadership team members. The emphasis will be on utilizing computer modeling and graphical programs to solve complex problems from electric vehicle, battery system, and charger data streams and comprehend system level function and interaction of the vehicle between the electrical, mechanical, fluids, and thermal components. Successful individuals for this role have a deep understanding of the engineering discipline and can connect real world application of designs with electrical theory. Having a high functioning level of processing abstract concepts is also important for success. Experience with scripting is considered a plus, and would allow for generation of scripts to analyze data and provide insight into failure trends as well as the possibility of developing prognostics to allow for scheduled repairs of failing components.
About the Role – You will:
- Spend several months training on the products
- Formal training classes from the Proterra Training Department
- Formal and Informal on-the-job training from senior engineers
- Both customer site (travel) and in-office training is required to understand the systems on board Proterra products
- Work with all Design Engineering departments to drive improvements and change:
- Provide input during design reviews to facilitate product improvement and lessons learned from newly discovered failure modes;
- Submit solutions for problems and create engineering change requests;
- Learn and Diagnose Failures on Electrical Vehicles and Charging Systems:
- Dataloggers transmitting live data streams of vehicle parameters allow remote diagnostics of failures, and commercial along with Proterra custom software are used for reviewing and analyzing data;
- Graphically interpret recorded data and remotely diagnose faulty systems;
- Root cause of failure requires interpretation of the data analysis coupled with the schematics to determine where the system failure occurred;
- Work with Proterra field technicians to maintain fleet availability by providing advanced technical support:
- Local technicians at customer sites escalate difficult issues that need to be troubleshot and have lessons learned fed back into the diagnostics;
- Design special tools as needed;
- Examples include system training racks, guards, temporary test setups, etc;
- Create documentation to convert tribal knowledge learned from data analysis into effective information to better characterize failure modes;
- For individuals experienced with scripting:
- Understand the raw data stream and architecture;
- Develop ad hoc software analysis tools for interpreting raw data;
- Generate automated scripts for pushing information out to the team when failures or system problems occur;

- This position will be part of the Customer Service team that supports Proterra’s Manufacturing and Engineering operations.
- You will report to the Site Customer Service Engineering Manager and collaborate with other Customer Service team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and other manufacturing facilities in Greenville, SC and Los Angeles, CA.

Your Experience Includes:
- Engineering Bachelor’s Degree (Electrical Engineering preferred) or equivalent relevant experience
- Advanced understanding of physics concepts and the ability to relate to real world scenarios
- Proven experience in hands-on diagnosing and repair of equipment
- Proven experience to graphically interpret data behind problematic systems and remotely recommend next steps for repair
- Advanced understanding of concepts and mathematics behind fundamental circuit analysis
- Proven experience with reading and generating schematics
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.
You might also have:
- Transit, heavy vehicle or other transferable experience.
- Experience with hybrid or electric vehicles.
- Programming experience (Python preferred)
- CAD Design Experience (SolidWorks or CATIA preferred)
