Role Description

Position Overview

This position will provide body engineering support to Proterra’s Director of Body Engineering and other site leadership team members. This position will be responsible for the design and release of composite and metal bus body structures for all current and future Proterra platforms. Additionally, this role will require the candidate to provide design direction through use of component and system level CAE. The position will have an emphasis on supporting new model product development. This position will report to the Director of Body Engineering and collaborate with other team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and other manufacturing facility in Greenville, SC.

About the Role – You will:

  • Design and release advanced composite, metal, and multi-material solutions for Proterra bus body architectures.
  • Use solid mechanics theory and the FE method to lead the design, verification, and optimization of body components/assemblies through model creation, analysis, and post processing.
  • Develop and implement industry best practices for bus body design and the integration of adjacent vehicle systems.
  • Pioneer robust component and system level DFMEAs and Design Verification Plans.
  • Create body sub-system specifications, interface with key suppliers, and manufacturing in support of vehicle level requirements.
  • Invent robust vehicle development and validation plans, and work with product validation engineering to ensure product meets customer requirements.
  • Work with CAD and CAE resources to ensure 3D data integrity and drawing accuracy as well as high performance and efficiency of design.
  • Conduct component and system level CAE studies for the Body and adjacent sub-systems to meet performance objectives while optimizing for cost and weight.
  • Author statement of requirements as part of strategic sourcing initiatives.
  • Support test and field incident resolution for issues related to body functionality.
  • Implement new technologies focused on advancing future products relative to cost, weight, performance, and the scaling of body manufacturing.
  • Utilize knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes to resolve build issues.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

About You

  • A young professional with an appetite for learning and growth within body engineering; resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways.
  • Strong analytical and problems solving skills are critical to this assignment.
  • Knowledge of design, development, validation, manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Experience with key development tools such as APQP, DFMEA, DFM, DFA, DVP, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Proficiency with standard 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA V6
  • Self-starter with the ability to balance and prioritize.
  • Solid people, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Team player who understands and demonstrates by example the importance of working well with others both internal and external to the organization.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.

Your Experience Includes

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Required.
  • 1 – 3 years minimum of progressive product development experience within the transportation and/or composites industry.
  • Experience in manufacturing and assembly environments a plus.
  • Commercial bus, heavy truck, automotive or vehicle systems design a plus.
  • Vehicle body structure design and development experience a plus.
