Role Description

ZeroAvia is a leader in zero-emission aviation, flying the world's largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. Its focus is the design and commercialization of hydrogen-powered aviation solutions to address a variety of markets, initially targeting short-haul, sub-regional commercial flights up to 500 miles. To date, ZeroAvia has secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly for its 6-seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain, passed significant flight tests, and is on track for commercial deliveries by 2023. Its achievements to date were rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member to the UK Jet Zero Council.

ZeroAvia’s powertrain development focuses on integrating hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cell systems, and electric motors, delivering a solution that will be not only without carbon emissions but also cheaper to operate. Commercializing the solution requires the establishment of a new clean aviation ecosystem, encompassing hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and tackling public perception of safety.

As a member of the team, you will lead the definition of the architecture of our powertrain systems to meet the operational, safety and certification requirements necessary to develop our novel powertrain systems.

Responsibilities

  • Drive architectures of new/novel functions necessary to control and certify our Hydrogen Electrical Propulsion System.
  • Coordinate multi-functional design inputs between the Mechanical, Electrical, H2 Fuel, and Software systems for our powertrain.
  • Perform the decomposition of aircraft, system and components, define the system physical / logical architecture and allocate functionality.
  • Perform trades studies to assess performance, complexity, risk, and cost of competing technical solutions.
  • Work closely with system and safety analysis to define system architectural features to meet safety and airworthiness requirements.
  • Derive and validate requirements and interfaces based on the architecture to ensure correct and complete implementation at the next design level.
  • Support product development all the way through development up to production, test, and certification.

Basic Qualification

  • Degree in aerospace, mechanical or electrical engineering (or comparable)
  • Experience with innovation projects, prototype and product development, flight demonstrators in the field of sustainable aviation
  • Experience with international, multi-cultural and multi-generation team
  • People leadership experience with multinational teams

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Standard process and certification experience with ARP4754 / ARP4761, DO-178C, FAA Part 21 and 33, EASA, CAA, FAA authorities
  • Experience working with Battery and H2 Fuel Cell for electric propulsion systems in aviation

Diversity and inclusion

ZeroAvia is an equal opportunity employer and as a young company in the aviation industry, we value diversity and need people of different backgrounds that bring a plethora of skills, perspectives, and mindsets to the table that can spur originality, imagination, and creativity. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, sex, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status or disability status.
