Job Description:
Lilac is seeking a mechanical engineer to lead mechanical design of custom chemical process equipment for Lilac's bead manufacturing facilities. Responsibilities will include working with process and materials engineers to determine specifications of equipment, conceptual and detailed design, procurement and fabrication, installation, commissioning, and operations for process equipment and systems at pilot and commercial scale. This is a full-time position.
Position Responsibilities
(80%) Responsible for the mechanical portion of capital projects to include:
- Supervise mechanical design including plant layout, equipment arrangement, piping and instrumentation, plant utilities;
- Coordinate mechanical and electrical designs;
- Develop specifications and purchase mechanical equipment and systems including process equipment, material handling equipment, complex machinery, material conveyance systems, dust collection systems, storage silos, tanks, pumps, and valves – monitor and expedite deliveries;
- Participate in project design review meetings and coordinate with vendors;
- Prepare installation scope of work, bid and award contracts;
- Supervise the installation of mechanical equipment, and mechanical systems;
- Manage their portion of project scope, schedule, budget, and quality;
- Enforce company safety rules and regulations;
- Supervise mechanical system checkout, equipment startup, and turnover to plant;
(20%) Responsible for the development of Capital Project Requests to include:
- Scale up of process design as required for production (i.e. size tanks and pumps, determine flow rates, throughputs, etc.);
- Evaluate utility requirements and determine availability;
- Supervise preparation of equipment arrangement and P&I drawings;
- Prepare mechanical equipment lists;
- Solicit quotations for equipment and systems or estimate pricing using recent purchases;
- Develop installation scope of work for mechanical equipment and systems;
- Solicit quotations for installation or estimate costs using sound engineering judgment;

Candidate Requirements:
- Degree in mechanical engineering or related field with 2+ years of experience in chemical or materials manufacturing
- Experience with custom chemical equipment design, piping design and sizing, equipment commissioning and plant integration.
- Knowledge of Inventor, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D CAD systems and in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
- Passion for rapid prototyping and innovation
- Highly organized with sharp attention to numerical detail
- Excited to work on a small fast-paced startup team with a drive to succeed and grow with the company
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a periodic basis
- Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
- Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
- Move long distances (across large warehouse floor)
- Can travel to sites across the Western US up to 50% of the time
