Role Description

Alloy Enterprises is developing a new way to manufacture complex aluminum parts on-demand at the unit cost of casting. The 16-person team is creating novel materials, hardware, and software to commercialize their manufacturing process. The Founders have a combined 10 startups between them and bring along hard lessons learned. Alloy values honesty and transparency, and we make sure to take care of our people. Founded in early 2020 in a Somerville carriage house, the company is venture-backed and has contracts with the National Science Foundation, the United States Air Force, and commercial customers.

We are looking for a hard-working and versatile candidate to accelerate the success of Alloy’s novel machines and processes. This is an opportunity to interface with all members of the team to deliver quality parts to customers. Strong communication, flexibility, and the desire to “wear many hats” will all be essential skills for any successful applicant.

What you will do:

  • Brainstorm, prototype, and test designs using an iterative processes
  • Design subsystems for additive manufacturing equipment
  • Design and implement control systems for high performance equipment
  • Interface with vendors and consultants to design and fabricate electrical panels’
  • Implement and optimize robotic arms
  • Design sheet metal enclosures
  • Utilize calculations and parametric modeling to evaluate design trade-offs
  • Document design decisions and test results
  • Design, build, and operate test fixtures
  • Perform root-cause analyses

About you:

  • Detail oriented, from the start to end of a product development cycle
  • You take ownership of your projects
  • You are adaptable and excel when working in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with industrial and motion control systems
  • Familiar with design for manufacturing; particularly sheet metal
  • Comfortable working with electrical systems
  • Proficient in SolidWorks
  • Enjoy the gritty details of part design, material selection, and manufacturing techniques
  • 3+ years industry experience
  • 4 year degree in Mechanical Engineering

Preferred skills:

  • Familiar with metal additive manufacturing, robotics, and/or industrial automation
  • Basic electrical & SW experience desired: soldering, cable design, or scripting (python)
  • Background in electro-mechanical systems or precision machine design
  • Experience with motors, sensors, stages or gantries, lasers, or optics
  • Design for manufacturing using weldments, sheet metal and machined components - especially with rapid turnaround vendors
  • Experience with rapid prototyping: 3D printing, mill, lathe, laser cutting, CNC, hand tools, SolidWorks, 2D Drawings, PDM, CAM, and FMEAs
  • Develop, design, or modify detailed drawings and specifications of difficult scope
