Role Description

Amber Kinetics is looking for a talented Power Electronics Engineer to spearhead development of power converters used in our flywheel energy storage electrical systems.

Duties

  • Owns the development of power electronics systems supported or developed by the electrical team, including auxiliary power supplies derived from AC mains, auxiliary power supplies derived from a high voltage DC bus, and the flywheel powertrain
  • Implements digital control loops to provide stable current or voltage sources that meet the system requirements while minimizing dependence on proprietary PMICs
  • Drives converter part selection based on system cost and efficiency, as well as availability of components used in converter designs, including microcontrollers, power passives and both SiC and Si power semiconductors
  • Performs simulations to inform design trade-offs and model converter dynamics
  • Conducts laboratory tests to verify converter performance and standards compliance
  • Guides or directly edits power electronics subsystems in schematics, circuit board layouts, and component definitions (as needed) for prototype and production designs
  • Works cross-functionally to receive design feedback and evaluate trade-offs across domains; facilitates buy-in for significant design changes or project proposals
  • Prepares technical documentation in preparation of Engineering Changes (ECOs) to release new features and improve reliability and performance of existing designs
  • Participates in technical reviews and provides guidance and feedback for team members across design, test, and release stages

Required Experience and Skills

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering and 3 or more years of electrical design experience
  • Design, debug, and release of multiple printed circuit assemblies; able to quickly design and test prototypes as well as compile documentation for release to volume production
  • Technical breadth in power electronics, including loss modeling and measurement, control implementation, filter design, and thermal management
  • Expertise in digital control loop design, simulation and implementation in C/C++
  • Ability to quantify losses across design implementations and operating conditions.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices in printed circuit board layout and routing to minimize losses, EMI and thermal impedance
  • Conversant in magnetics design, from off-the-shelf component selection to custom magnetics design
  • Clear and consistent in writing and technical presentation
  • Adept at using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power meters, probes, multimeters, and other tools to troubleshoot prototype, production, and fielded hardware

Desirable Experience and Skills

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering and 3 or more years of electrical design experience
  • Proficiency with Altium design tools and familiarity with 3D CAD software
  • Experience with conversion systems operating at greater than 1 kV and 50 kVA
  • Optimization of conversion systems to meet cost, reliability and performance targets
  • Familiarity with the C2000 family of microcontrollers used for power electronics control
  • Knowledge of UL 1741 and other agency approval requirements
  • Knowledge of IPC standards for electronics manufacturing
  • Engineering Change (ECO) experience, from proposal to validation to release
  • Programming in Python for scripting or modeling
