Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Principal Thermal Engineer to lead thermal analysis of Ambri’s DC system product.
Position Overview
Ambri is seeking an individual to be a senior member of the Ambri Systems Engineering team. The position requires working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to design novel solutions to complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri’s Liquid Metal Battery technology. The individual in this role will be called upon to be an innovative problem solver, provide technical leadership, work cross functionally, and communicate effectively with others within and outside the organization. The lead thermal engineer is responsible for analyzing and solving all heat transfer processes within Ambri’s battery storage system.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare thermal design requirements and conduct system level thermal analysis based on mechanical designs provided to you
- Based on your in-depth understanding of thermal transport phenomenon, propose practical new design concepts to help Ambri achieve our product goals
- Lead thermal efforts to scope, define, solve, implement and validate designs
- Lead thermal design of thermal test verification activities for materials and system operation
- Work with mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing engineering disciplines to ensure overall system requirements are cost effectively being meet
- Derive thermal conditions of energy storage system for a range of operating conditions including the effects from charge/discharge at various c-rates and rest periods
- Perform quick ‘rough estimate’ calculations to quickly verify thermal models and concepts during collaborative design meetings
- Take responsibility for design activities, ensure solution meets requirements, and execution meets schedule requirements
- Specifically select material, and components to ensure adherence to thermal requirements are met
- Prepare design review materials and participate in design reviews
- Work with Program Management on estimating project effort, reporting on project progress and task execution
- Execute worst case analysis on design to meeting company quality standards
- Perform and review DFMEA analysis activities on systems to verify system performance to requirements
- Conduct modeling of electronic systems and thermal management solutions using FEA, CFD, and analyzes based on first principles
- Specify thermal management solutions for high power, high heat flux electronic assemblies
- Design thermal test set-ups and execute testing programs
- Prepare proposals contributing to conceptual thermal designs, costs & performance estimates
- Manage customers, suppliers and sub-contractors of thermal management solutions to schedule and technical performance
**Requirements: **
- Must have at least a BSME degree, MSME or higher preferred.
- Demonstrated excellent problem solving skills
- Minimum 20 years of thermal modeling, specifying, and testing thermal systems and thermal management solutions
- Knowledge of heat transfer, thermal management, and cooling of electronics.
- Experience using Solidworks CAD software (or equivalent) to do thermal modeling/geometry modeling
- Experience in cooling systems with a large number of battery cells and electronic assemblies
- Experience using thermal simulation software for transient and steady state analysis.
- Deep knowledge of thermal behavior and heat dissipation within electrical systems.
- Demonstrated excellent problem solving skills
- Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability of working well within a team and independently to achieve results
- Familiarity with electrical board layout to ensure component placement is optimized for thermal considerations. This includes analyzing junction temperatures and component temperatures on PCBA
