Role Description

At Tomorrow Farms, we’re reinventing our favorite foods so they're better for people, kinder to animals, and easier on the planet. We see ourselves as the "front end" of the future of food, harnessing the most exciting and innovative food technologies to build unforgettable brands and irresistible products. We're working towards a more equitable and harmonious food system, and ultimately envision a future where animal-based products have become obsolete.

Our first product, which will be announced in just a few weeks, is a complete game-changer for the sustainable food space.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a strategic, proactive, and organized Senior Manager, Product Development to lead the development of our growing portfolio of innovative animal-free food & beverage products. You’ll play a critical role in the success and direction of the business by leveraging your food science expertise and practical manufacturing experience to guide development and review of formulations for current and future products.

Reporting to our Head of Operations & Strategy, and collaborating closely with our Operations team, you’ll work together to create new products, from conceptualization to commercialization, including supplier and contract manufacturer evaluation. You’ll evaluate our existing products, and seek opportunities to improve ingredient quality, nutritional profile, flavor, texture, and overall consumer appeal. You’ll also work closely with our CEO and Business Development team by supporting the evaluation of new R&D partners and the application of proprietary ingredients or processes from these potential partners for use in new products.

You are a food lover and tinker at heart and are excited to build a category-defining food tech company, using innovative technology and ingredients to develop new products. You have the ability to zoom into the smallest of formulation details, while also maintaining a big picture of the finished product in sight. Most importantly, you can’t wait to join a fast-paced, dynamic, high-growth start-up and shape the future, not just of the company, but also of our world.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

**Product Development **

  • Work directly with our external R&D partners from ideation/product briefs to locking a final formula and work closely with the consumer insights team to guide ingredients in product formulation.
  • Document, evaluate, and iterate on formula prototypes with R&D partners, synthesizing feedback from the team on taste, texture, color, etc. to guide development work.
  • Evaluate ingredient specification sheets to determine the potential for formula application and impact to ingredient and nutrition labels.
  • Work directly with flavor houses to iterate on flavoring work as necessary.
  • Coordinate ingredient requests to facilitate prototyping by R&D and flavoring partners.
  • Reformulate existing products to make improvements across dimensions such as ingredient quality, nutritional profile, taste, texture, and consumer appeal.

Commercialization

  • Evaluate and make recommendations on the appropriate packaging format for our products that optimize shelf life and product stability. Partner with the rest of the Operations team to look for opportunities to remove plastic from our supply chain and shift towards more sustainable, plant based packaging options without negatively impacting product integrity.
  • Help the Operations team identify and evaluate suitable contract manufacturing partners with the appropriate technical capabilities to produce our products. Support the Operations team in setting technical requirements for scaling up final formula from lab prototype to mass production with contract manufacturers.
  • Assist in setting quality standards for ingredient suppliers and contract manufacturers and ensure that production is maintained at such standards.
  • Work with R&D and manufacturing partners to establish and extend product stability and shelf life, including sensory dimensions like color and flavor.

**Ingredient and Product Strategy **

  • Support Business Development in their evaluation of new product categories and R&D partners.
  • Review proprietary ingredients or processes for potential application in new products.
  • Own and set company ingredient philosophy. Review retailer requirements and academic research to set guidelines for ingredients we choose to use or not use in our products.
  • Be the internal expert on all things ingredient related - sources, purposes/applications, claims, chemistry, nutritional content, etc.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor's degree in hard sciences, e.g., food science, chemistry, or biology.
  • 5+ years of professional work experience in food science, product development, or contract manufacturing in the food & beverage space.
  • Experience working at a high-growth startup, a plus.

WHO YOU ARE

  • You have a passion for food and consumer goods, sustainability and environmental impact, and entrepreneurial environments. You’re passionate about how the food and beverage industry can make an impact on climate change, human health, biodiversity and food systems.
  • You have a technical background in food science and product development. Reading specification sheets for new ingredients and scientific research immediately gets your brain thinking about possible applications into new products. You’re a scientist at heart and excited to use science to create the future of food/
  • You’ve worked at or with contract manufacturers and understand that formulas and processes may need to be tweaked to scale a product from lab prototype to mass production.
  • You are an amazing cross-functional project manager. You set clear expectations with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You have an extremely high attention to detail. Tracking formula changes and differences in ingredient specs come naturally to you.
  • You’re a phenomenal communicator, and consider this to be one of your greatest strengths. You communicate proactively, rather than reactively. You know when to use technical jargon with R&D partners and when to explain things more plainly for a more customer friendly audience.
  • You are persistent and it doesn’t scare you when you hear that something has never been done before. In fact, it strengthens your resolve.
  • You are the epitome of a team player – positive, empathetic, personable, and motivating. This also translates into the way you build and maintain external relationships with business partners
