**Team Overview: **

Heliogen seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead internal and contracted development efforts related to advanced heat exchangers, rotating machinery, and other thermal systems during our next phase of growth.  A Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in the Power Generation and Thermal Systems team will have the opportunity to work with leading developers of solar thermal energy collection and storage systems and supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) technology to deploy a commercially viable concentrating solar power plant, including leading risk retirement testing, prototype fabrication, and commissioning.

**You Aspire To: **

  • Lead component risk retirement efforts by collecting experiences in R&D and industrial applications, planning for and conducting component and system-level tests, and executing commissioning activities.
  • Support system integration design, modeling, and analysis including accounting for impacts on piping, ducting, and balance of plant equipment.
  • Support mechanical design and packaging of integrated turbomachinery packages using state of the art and high reliability components based on trade analyses.
  • Consider heat transfer, material properties, and service limits in the design of equipment exposed to high temperature and thermal cycling.
  • Guide manufacturing scale-up to 5-10x the existing industrial capacity through strategic partnerships, supply chain development, and process automation.
  • Interface with other engineers, and field personnel to support the execution of on-sun testing, validating test results against process analysis and simulations.

What's Essential:

  • Bachelors degree and 3+ years experience (or MS/PhD in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering including hands-on equipment design and fabrication, installation, and performance testing)
  • Experience analyzing and designing heat exchangers including plate- and tube-fin technologies.
  • Experience managing vendor work scopes including raw material suppliers, fabricators, system integrators, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Familiarity with FMEA, hazard analysis in the context of industrial process safety
  • Passion for working in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational ability, including formulation of project goals, deliverables, and timeline for execution

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with sCO2 heat exchanger and/or turbomachinery design, analysis, and testing
  • Experience analyzing and designing elements of turbomachines including bearings, seals, radial and axial impellers, shaft couplings, rotordynamic analysis, or secondary flow analysis.
  • Familiarity developing technology from small-scale prototyping to manufacturing and increased production capacity
  • Familiarity with industrial codes and standards relevant to turbomachinery from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Petroleum Institute (API)
