Role Description

Amber Kinetics is looking for an experienced PCB Designer/Engineer for our flywheel energy storage systems. The candidate will serve as a backbone in our prototyping, documentation, manufacturing, and certification efforts – assisting in updates to the flagship M32 product, as well as producing new printed circuit board assemblies that will enable higher power, capacity, and efficiency systems in our energy storage product roadmap.

Duties

  • Production of fully routed printed circuit board layouts based on complete schematics, written design specifications, mechanical drawings, diagrams and/or rough floorplans.
  • Modification of printed circuit board artwork in response to engineering changes, reliability or manufacturability improvements, and design iteration.
  • Management cloud-based component library, including creation and/or checking of schematic symbols and footprint artwork, entry of part parameters and alternates.
  • Generation of production documentation packages (fabrication and assembly files and drawings, bills of materials, etc.) required for full release to contract manufacturer.
  • Release of production files to the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Assistance in generation of prototype board gerbers and NC drill files.
  • Verification that Altium library components, schematics, and bills of materials (Excel) have accurate parameters and descriptions, as well as correct and consistent formatting.
  • Monitoring of supply chain for components in active designs to help advise risk-buys of important parts needed for engineering tests or consignment in low-volume builds.
  • Participation in design reviews, including organizing and presenting the review of layouts and production outputs, as well as providing feedback across all stages of development.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Associates or comparable certificates in drafting, electronics, circuit design or similar.
  • 5+ years of printed circuit board layout and release experience for designs including mixed signal, power electronics, microcontrollers and ethernet communications.
  • Experienced in through-hole and surface-mount electronics component technologies, including industry-standard sizes and packages, as well as common values and ratings
  • Technical literacy and attention to detail when reading data sheets, application notes, design requirements, mechanical drawings, and IPC, UL or other standards.
  • Proficient in Altium Designer or other EDA tool, including expertise in query-based design rules, channelized and hierarchical schematics, and editor shortcuts and hotkeys.
  • Familiarity with IPC standards for component design, board fabrication and assembly.
  • Clear communication when working with engineers and contract manufacturers.
  • Organized when creating new parts or filing structures.

Desirable Experience and Skills

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
  • Altium Designer Certification (Essentials or Advanced).
  • IPC Certified Interconnect Designer.
  • Experience with adhering to UL 1741, UL 60950 or MIL creepages/clearances.
  • Design and release management in Altium 365 cloud-based platform.
  • Knowledgeable of manufacturers and distributors for common, off-the-shelf parts.
  • Manufacturing ramp experience, supporting designs and documentation packages from prototypes, initial release, certification, and subsequent engineering changes (ECOs).
  • Coordination of electrical and mechanical models; ECAD/MCAD integration.
  • Training/experience in design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for reliability (DFR).
  • Management of Altium multi-board projects.
  • Configuration of signal and power integrity studies.
