Role Description

Position Overview

This position will provide comprehensive support to Proterra’s Manufacturing Projects Team. This role will focus on excellence in Vehicle Assembly process and the development of physical and digital equipment. This individual will execute projects to improve existing manufacturing lines, support the integration of new vehicle variants/configs into existing plants, as well as support the development of new manufacturing factories. You will be joining an agile team with many opportunities for personal growth as well as have the opportunity to work on class leading sustainable mass transit products.

About the Role – You Will:

  • Work concurrently with software and hardware design team (HV/LV/Electrical) members to define manufacturing EOL/Commissioning requirements for new configurations and products as they enter production.
  • Work with Service Teams to design and develop tooling and equipment for the bring-up of vehicles for development, production, and service teams.
  • Define integrated diagnostic requirements for industry leading uptime and the ability to perform advanced diagnostic and vehicle maintenance proactively prior to failures occurring.
  • Work with engineering, manufacturing, and service to drive clarity on standard best practices for diagnostics.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize new diagnostic test procedures and sequences for Manufacturing and Service teams.
  • Validate existing programming parameters and identify potential gaps or improvement’s with ME and Engineering teams.
  • Design, validate, and hand-off in-line and end-of-line (EOL) test procedures to production/operations teams.
  • Work with engineering and suppliers to push for components which are flashed and pre-programmed where possible to improve production efficiency.
  • Support development of in-house diagnostic tools.
  • Develop technical documentation to flow information to Production and Service teams.
  • Look to continuously improve the process and product (e.g. reliability, quality, cost improvements).
  • Train, develop, and empower team members towards a culture ownership, accountability, and results with the goal of delivering industry leading technology and reliability to our customers.
  • Understand Manufacturing and Service Diagnostic requirements and develop roadmap to support production sites and field service teams.
  • Establish a Diagnostics manufacturing roadmap. Ability to do detailed role related work, while stepping back (zooming out) to ensure actions and efforts are aligning to overall company objects and roadmap.
  • Provide analytics and drive robustness and up-time in vehicle operation and reduce troubleshooting and rework by developing robust validation plans on both the component and system level.
  • Document and trend diagnostic reworks and failure modes to feedback and improve production systems and component/system level designs.
  • Manage suppliers and support the development of EOL/Test equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Your Experience Includes

  • Knowledge of CAN and Ethernet communication and protocols
  • BS in Software, Mechatronics, Programming, or Electrical preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 3 years minimum, 5+ years’ experience in EV automotive engineering preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders, while aligning with long-term goals.
  • Ability to manage conflicts, set deadlines, and hit targets for new and existing projects as they arise.
  • Ability to effectively communicate progress, risk, and updates to relevant stakeholders.
  • Self-starter who can work autonomously and achieve advocacy and buy-in from others on projects.
  • Experience using CAN programming and Diagnostic applications (CANalyzer, CANoe, etc).

You May Also Have

  • Experience with electrical diagram design and 2D/3D modeling preferred.
  • Knowledge of SAE J1708 (serial communication on heavy duty vehicles) and SAE J1772 standards.
  • Experience and understanding of vehicle architecture and diagnostic development
  • Experience on new BEV development process.
