Role Description

FreeWire Technologies seeks an experienced Utility Sales Director to lead our engagement with this key market vertical. At FreeWire, we fundamentally change the way businesses and utilities electrify. Our proprietary battery-integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy storage systems provide clean and quiet power anywhere it’s needed, accelerating charging infrastructure deployment while easing the strain on the electric grid.

FreeWire’s solutions are evolving from providing ultrafast EV charging to a full suite of energy services to accelerate sustainable electrification and provide resiliency to customers and a distributed power source to utilities. FreeWire has secured major strategic investors from Fortune 100 companies and serves leading corporate, utility, and retail customers. Customer reception of the Boost Charger, FreeWire’s ultrafast DC charger, has been overwhelmingly positive as we electrify locations that would have been too expensive to power on using conventional charging solutions. There is a massive market opportunity and momentum with utilities, which are actively releasing RFPs with requests for battery-backed solutions and including our technology as eligible for incentives as they seek cost-effective solutions to electrify fleets and provide utility-owned charging solutions for the public.

The right candidate will understand utility motivations and business models and have successfully sold into the utility market, whether the utility is an IOU, public power provider, or part of a cooperative. This candidate will have strong utility contacts and prospect within these organizations to identify the right buyers, influencers, and approvers. We are seeking an individual who has excellent communication and consultative selling skills, a proven track record of achieving utility revenue targets, and a strong desire to impact the status quo. Not satisfied with the typical utility sales cycle, the Utility Sales Director will promote a compelling vision of the utility role within the charging market to advance a deeper relationship with FreeWire and its cutting-edge products and energy management software to advance new partnership opportunities.

Your role:

  • Create a strategy for scaling utility sales based on your nuanced view of the broader energy and power landscape, including EV charging, energy services, utility business models and regulatory structures
  • Leverage past work with leading utility customers, and successful deployment of innovative solutions, to generate a pipeline of qualified customers and progress them through product diligence, initial deployment, and subsequent orders
  • Deftly manage a pipeline, hit quota, and provide timely and accurate forecasting
  • Source opportunities to educate and influence stakeholders impacting utility market and develop content for webinars, presentations for conferences, and facilitate working groups to advance FreeWire’s vision
  • Articulate, scope and model the benefits of new feature requirements for the Utility segment
  • Work with Product and Design teams to evaluate energy-related partnership opportunities both from a commercial and technical perspective
  • Evidence leadership by working closely with Sales colleagues to develop regional account strategies, and mentor Account Managers and Sales Representatives to support your utility outreach and business execution and their career growth
  • Collaborate and support content for marketing campaigns, including research on market trends and costs, and policy implications to generate and promote industry thought leadership
  • Operate as the General Manager of the utility segment, taking full accountable for its success

Requirements:

  • 10 + years of related experience in utility sales or business development (experience with energy storage, EV charging or renewable generation a plus)
  • Master’s degree and knowledge of the electrical grid is preferred
  • Dedication to timely documentation and reporting
  • Experience in managing and improving sales processes
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, capable of connecting and relating well to individuals at all levels of an organization with excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to present to both colleagues and clients
  • A team player able to manage and train colleagues on the complexity of the utility sale
  • Ability to lead contract negotiations with utility procurement counterparties and
  • An obsession with client satisfaction – going above and beyond expectations
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance competing feature requests, customer demands, and development resources
  • Ability to work in a (very) fast-moving environment and remain calm and mission focused
