Functional Safety Engineer

Quality Assurance & HSSE
REMOTE

Role Description

What we’re building

Our vision is to electrify all waterborne vessels, and we're starting with electric watersport boats.

An electric boat is superior to a gas boat in almost every way: not only is it way easier to maintain (the single biggest pain point of owning a gas boat) and a lot cheaper to operate (a day of use costs ~$10 compared to ~$100 for a gas boat), but it’s also quieter, faster, more stable, and cleaner, with no fumes or pollutants.

Battery tech is finally good enough to pull this off, but a truly performant electric boat also requires a strong, lightweight hull to accommodate the large battery. With years of experience in aerospace manufacturing, we believe we can disrupt the gasoline boating industry through first principle engineering, innovative production techniques, and a scrappy start-up approach to problem solving.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is excited by our vision, eager for the challenge, and willing to learn on the job. You’ll report straight to Ryan, our CTO, and will work out of our manufacturing facility in Los Angeles.

Given that we’re an early stage company, you will be working in a fast-moving, dynamic environment. Your role at the company will be similarly dynamic. More than anything, we’re looking for someone that can adapt to the changing needs of the company. That said, there are some responsibilities and qualifications we expect to stay relatively constant for this role.

Core responsibilities

  • Drive the development of functional safety system requirements for various systems owning FMEA
  • Actively contribute to the definition and/or confirmation of the system architectures in the vehicle from the perspective of functional safety
  • Collaborate on functional safety with hardware and system development teams, and suppliers
  • Own functional safety validation tests from simulation, HIL, SIL and vehicle test approaches
  • Contribute to test plans, data analysis and feature validation tests

Basic qualifications

  • Experience with model-based design; creating control systems & models with Matlab/Simulink
  • Knowledge of embedded software development processes and the systems engineering V-model
  • Familiarity with one or more vehicle embedded systems and functions related to EV drivetrain, infotainment, autonomy systems, chassis control, etc
  • Hands on experience for hardware development and troubleshooting

Bonus qualifications

  • Knowledge of ISO 26262 (or similar, such as DO-178C) and its applications in automotive (or aerospace, etc) software
  • Understanding of AUTOSAR based architectures
  • Familiarity with marine ISO or IEC standards
  • Experience with prototyping hardware systems such as the battery packs, camera systems, power distribution, or related electrical integrations for vehicle control
  • Ability to articulate and defend engineering decisions
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Strong time management skills
  • Comfortable working 50 hours a week

At Arc, we encourage diversity and consider all qualified applicants equally for employment, regardless of background, identity, or status. You're welcome to reach out even if you feel you don't meet these qualifications. Passion and aptitude make up for a lot.

What we value

We value these three things above all else:

  • Empathy, for colleagues and for customers
  • Pragmatism, for navigating ambiguity quickly and sensibly
  • Diversity, of background, opinion, culture, etc.

Given that we’re a small team working in a sometimes intense or stressful environment, it’s vital that our values align. We’d be happy to elaborate on any or all of these during the interview process.

What you’ll get

  • Smart teammates who will challenge you to be better
  • Access to and input over every aspect of the business
  • A meaningful equity stake
  • An opportunity to launch an industry-defining product in under a year
  • Knowledge that you’re helping save the environment
  • Nearly free health insurance
  • Lots of snacks

How to get the job

  1. Introduce yourself in an email to work@arcboats.com
  2. Complete a technical phone screen with Ryan, our CTO
  3. Have a conversation with Mitch, our CEO
  4. Conduct an on-site interview with the team
  5. Get an offer!

Since we’re a small team, we can move at whatever pace you’d like. If you’re in a hurry, we can get through those steps in a matter of days. If you want to take your time, we can spread it out over weeks or even months. Either way, we generally respond to all emails within a few hours.

Hope to hear from you soon!
