Position Overview
As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the functional safety activities for Proterra’s battery systems. This will require leading the technical analysis to develop safety goals and safety requirements, while managing and overseeing the functional safety technical work across several engineering teams to ensure correct implementation of architecture, hardware and software components.
About the Role – You will:
- Lead all functional safety activities for the development of Proterra’s battery systems
- Define DIA and other necessary documents for external project partners, including plans to ensure timely completion of partners’ functional safety activities.
- Lead and manage the execution of relevant functional safety analysis steps (e.g. conducting HARA, deriving safety goals, developing safety concepts, deriving functional safety requirements, assessing hardware failure metrics, etc.)
- Generate and deliver high-quality and timely functional safety work products and other supporting documentation
- Develop functional safety validation plan and support the execution of the validation tests
- Conduct reviews with internal product teams and external project partners to ensure functional safety standards are being met throughout product development cycles
- Organize and support functional safety assessment to ensure systems are certified to compliance with ISO 26262
- Create safety manual to ensure Proterra’s battery systems are properly integrated into vehicles as a safety element out of context
About You:

Your Experience Includes:
- 5+ years of engineering experience in the automotive or energy storage industries, prior experience working on electric vehicles is preferred
- Extensive in-depth knowledge of ISO 26262 and experience developing and delivering the major work products of a functional safety program
- Experience working with high voltage battery systems
- Experience working on battery management systems or other automotive ECUs; familiar with model-based software development
- Experience with systems engineering practices, functional safety tools and requirements management tools (e.g. Jama)
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline (e.g. – Mechanical, Electrical, Software Engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience. Advanced engineering degree preferred
